3 Ways To Ground Yourself + Find Peace During Difficult and Uncertain Times
This blog is one of the best ways I know how to reach out to my community. So here I am—offering you (yes, YOU…) a safe place. An opportunity to press pause. A chance to take some time for yourself.
When you are having an anxiety or panic attack, try and focus in every stimulus that can help bring you back to the present moment.
Ask yourself in your mind:
- What are 5 things I can see right now? (Look at them in detail.)
- What are 4 things I can feel right now?
- What are 3 things I can hear right now?
- What are 2 things I can smell right now?
- What is 1 thing I can taste right now?
Hearing the sound of the wind, seeing the sunlight through the window or a moving shadow, smelling the fresh grass, tasting your tea and appreciating each flavor note: ginger, turmeric, black pepper, orange…these are all subtle things that we all too often don’t even notice in our busy lives yet are opportunities to build our inner reserves for comfort and appreciation which in turn, build our Emotional Muscle!
And the beauty of this habit is that it can be done anywhere, anytime, and it’s highly effective. It will take you a few minutes to slow down, breathe, relax your muscles and get back into the moment and out of your mind.
You may have heard from me of the “grounding” or “earthing” concept. Earthing means making contact with the earth with your bare skin which will balance your electromagnetic field, hormones and chemistry and DRAIN STRESS! Walking around barefoot, feeling the soft grass under your feet, walking on cold stones, sand, soil…feeling supported and held by the ground below you. This can be as simple as walking in your backyard and just being still. And when life gets in the way and you just can’t get outside as much as you would like, you can use some special products designed to help you bring the balancing energy of the Earth indoors to YOU. Here are some of my favorites.
Whether that’s something like a home facial, a self-massage, quiet nature walk, a relaxing CD or guided meditation, a long Epsom salt bath or whatever…just treat yourself with some self-love. Pause for a second whatever you are doing that’s frustrating you and take a moment to maybe apply a bit of serum, use your facial roller, cook your fave…perhaps it is just the craving for a bit of comfort during this period of unknowns. This is NOT selfish or indulgent but rather SMART self-care that will build your inner reserves and help replenish and restore your energy – something another cup of coffee or candy bar can NOT do!
