Take off your shoes and put your feet in the ground!

With our modern society, we spend the vast majority of our time inside and removed from direct contact with the earth and nature and that goes against the thousands of years of human existence and how we evolved to live in unison and harmony with the Earth – both for visible and invisible reasons! With our cement floors, rubber-soled footwear and living, working and sleeping inside, our whole way of life has disconnected us from the earth from which we came. This results in a whole slue of health modalities – some painfully obvious and some more subtle, which include increased inflammation, elevated blood pressure, triglycerides and cholesterol, sleep problems, anxiety, nervousness and overall racing or jumpy mind.

A big part of my healthy lifestyle includes as much regular contact with nature as possible – and I do it not only for my body but for my mind as well!

The cool thing is there’s a ton of science to back up what is happening here and why the effects are so very real AND powerful. In fact, there’s an entire new field of research called, Ecopsychology that studies the relationship between humans and the natural world. I wonder if they need a volunteer research subject!

According to Natural Health and Wellness site, “Because the Earth carries an electron-rich, negative charge, it provides a powerful and abundant supply of antioxidant electrons that effectively zap free radicals, lower inflammation and heal your body in numerous ways. When your bare feet come into contact with the ground, you absorb large amounts of negative electrons through your soles that’s sufficient enough to maintain your body at the same negatively charged electrical potential as the Earth. In this way, your contact with nature is more than emotional or spiritual, although it can be those things; coming into close physical contact with the Earth — the essence of nature — is also physiological. It brings healing in ways that are quantifiable.”

So how do I do it? It’s easy:

Basically I try to have some sort of direct contact with nature at several times a week – some days I only have time for a  few minutes, sometimes it might be an afternoon and others I can get a full dose of a whole weekend. One thing I’ve learned about maintaining a healthy lifestyle is that IT ALL MATTERS – even the littlest bits. All too often we get caught up in the “all or nothing” mentality with our health and fitness but that’s really a shame because in my experience, it’s all the little things that add to the big things. Put them all together over time and the next thing you know, you have a lifestyle…SCORE! 🙂

I’ll give you a specific example in the hopes it helps you: On days when I’m super busy, all I might be able to do is sneak in a few minutes of going outside and touching a tree while either on a walk with Charlotte or even just getting the mail. All I do is put my hand on the tree, close my eyes, breath and feel myself connect with the tree. Other times I might take a 10 minute work break during the day and step outside and put my feet in the grass which will instantly ground me, help me re-set and give me a boost of energy. And of course, the ultimate would be a few hours or perhaps and afternoon at the beach LYING DIRECTLY on my towel on the sand or swimming in the ocean!

Please give it a try yourself and give yourself the gift of healing Nature! You need no special equipment, skill or ability, it’s easy and it’s free…what more could we ask for?
