Does the Scale Matter?

Hey Amy — I’ve been working out for some time now and started weighing myself to track my progress but am confused and frustrated! The number on the scale is barely budging but I feel like I’ve lost some weight so what gives? Am I just wasting my time?

Thanks!

ANSWER:

You’ve heard it before: “Muscle weights more than fat” so sometimes when you workout the scale doesn’t change all that much…BUT this is what you have to keep in mind…

Although MORE THAN 1/2 of your basal metabolic rate is determined by how much MUSCLE you have (which SHOULD increase when you exercise and therefore you can LOOK smaller but have not lost weight on the scale), in the big picture the scale DOES matter!

A weight fluctuation of 2-2 ½ pounds is not necessarily a concern (due to sensitive hydration and salt-potassium levels), yet if you notice the increase is “sticking” consistently over a period of a few days, or worse, it’s “creeping up”, then it’s time to PUT THE BRAKES ON and clean up your diet!

xo,
Amy
