As people age, our muscle mass naturally dwindles. This process, called sarcopenia, begins as early as 20 and can ramp up to .4 lb loss in muscle each year by age 50! Yikes…!
Why is this an issue?
Because it is the muscle mass on our bodies that keep our “motor running” and our metabolism and energy high. Plus having nice, lean, toned muscles is attractive as they give the body shape and symmetry.
And let’s be honest, no one wants to lose their independence or attractiveness as we get older – I know I don’t!
The good news is there is a solution to fight off sarcopenia and to maintain your muscles: use them and use them in the right, smart and balanced way, with proper care, rest and feeding after.
Try to exercise your muscles with an assortment of movement patterns, intensities and resistance training modalities: from power yoga, to isometrics, to strength training, to body weight calisthenics to intense dancing, ballet or plyometrics or even sprinting/ running. And remember, consistency is key – it has to be a part of your regular lifestyle and who you are to be most effective and really work.
Keep challenging your muscles and they will repay you with ageless strength!
