If I ask you: “Who was Aphrodite?” What would you say? What comes to mind?
I think we need to clear up some common misconceptions about who and what the Greek Goddess Aphrodite was and what she represented.
Unfortunately history has not been too kind to her and as often happens, over time, original meanings, truths and actual events often get distorted.
Most people think of Aphrodite as the “Goddess of Sexuality” and perhaps even promiscuity or even prostitution.
Wrong, wrong, WRONG!
In fact, Aphrodite was the Goddess of Love and Beauty.
…of Connection, Relationships, Creativity and even “Mixing” things up!
She is the archetypal essence in ALL HUMANS of the energy that is expressed whenever we are engaged in a deep relationship (at the heart level), whether that be with another person or with something that has engaged all of our passionate attention and energy and causes us to be completely PRESENT.
…you know, the thing you do that you love so much you lose track of time…that’s her!
And when this passionate, engaged energy, or love/beauty is expressed in the container of a deep relationship, that’s when it can be sensual and sexual.
BIG DIFFERENCE don’t you think?!
In fact, whenever you are fully paying attention to and with another person, and that connection between the two of you, you have engaged the Aphrodite in you! 🙂
