Want Healthy Hair, Skin and Nails? …Eat Good Fats!

Contrary to a common misconception, eating fat does NOT “make you fat”…as long as  it’s the right kind of fat and eaten in conjunction with the proper type and amount of carbohydrates. If you want to be healthy, fit AND have beautiful, youthful hair, skin and nails, then making sure you eat the right fats in your diet is essential!

 

Important functions that good fats perform in our bodies:

 

  • Carry the important (anti-cancer, anti-aging) fat-soluble vitamins (E, D, A and K)
  • Are required to enable use of the fat-soluble vitamins (above)
  • Necessary to make all our hormones and to carry out their functions
  • Support growth and development (new cells, new skin, hair, nails, etc)
  • Essential for healthy hair, skin and nails (shine, texture, growth, etc.)
  • Increase metabolism
  • Provide satiety (satisfaction and feeling “full” after eating)
  • Replenish hormones and neurotransmitters from protein, and fat sources
  • are a great fuel source

 

…but remember, the RIGHT TYPE of fat is KEY!

 

Here are some of my favorite sources of healthy fats:

 

  •  Organic Raw Coconut Oil/Butter (cooking or as a yummy snack!)
  • Organic Hemp, Chia or Flax Seeds (I like to alternate)
  • Organic Butter (yup, real butter)
  • Fish/Cod Liver Oil (Carson’s or Nordic Naturals are the best, highest quality and most pure- no toxins)
  • Naturally occurring fats that are in organic/free-range lean meat, fish, poultry sources
  • Cold-pressed organic Olive Oil
  • Organic/Free-Range egg yolks (plus, the yolk contains ALL the vitamins!)
  • Organic Avocado (I eat almost 1/2 a day!)
  • Organic Almonds, Macadamia, Brazil or Walnuts (just control amount b/c they are high in Omega 6 (inflammatory) and are also high in calories and carbs…plus can be ADDICTIVE!)
  • Organic Evening Primrose or Borage oil
  • Organic sunflower seeds (same as above for nuts)
