When Adversity Strikes, How Do You Handle It? My 3 Tips

Carl Jung said: “No tree can grow to heaven unless it’s roots reach hell.”

One thing is sure in life, it’s not easy. We all face our own challenges and adversities and one of the hardest things to do is to overcome them. It is the people who have learned to look at challenges as valuable teaching moments are the ones who experience real growth. But, how do they convert pain into personal value? It’s definitely not easy!

In order to be truly fit and healthy for a lifetime we must always address all components of our being – both inside and out – that’s why I love learning and teaching about mental, spiritual and emotional fitness!

Here are three ideas to help you manage and leverage adversity:

First, we need to understand that pain is always a temporary condition and an opportunity to learn. Acknowledge that the situation is difficult, but also trust that you will survive and overcome it like you probably already did in the past – like a rock star!

Ask questions like, “How did I get here?” and “What caused this to happen?” Try to choose curiosity over self-pity or anger.

Second, look at your “other options”. We all have plenty of options, but when we face adversity we become blind, right? The most resilient people are masters at reminding themselves of this fact. REMEMBER: You always have a choice and often times it’s not the situation, but rather the meaning we give it that causes the reaction or emotion. Don’t give your power away. You can also become a master by answering these questions to figure out what your “other options” are:

  • What is the outcome that I initially wanted?
  • Why did I fail?
  • What other options could be good as well?
  • What stands in my way from making these outcomes happen?
  • What do I need to do to move forward in those other directions?

Third, find humor in your hardships. Humor helps people think more broadly and creatively. It is absolutely essential for the best problem solving, so try not to work not to take yourself, or your situation, too seriously. Like they say, angels can fly because they take themselves lightly!

Last, remember that other people have gone through what you’re going through and can help you. Seek support within your group of friends!

Remember, you are NOT ALONE! And you will come out of the adversity stronger than ever!
